Tragedy has again struck this devastated area. Heavy snows and torrential rains have caused the lake, formed by the earthquake, to burst its banks. Several people have drowned.  About 200 homes in Hattian, a divisional headquarters town, were destroyed.

Many villages close to the lake have had to be evacuated as the weather caused landslips.

Background

The Kashmir Earthquake of October 2005 killed close to 100,000 people with millions left homeless by the devastation. Reports in the media lasted a few days before being overtaken by other events but the effects of this catastrophe will be felt for generations.

The Kashmir Community Fund is a small initiative focussing on the remote mountain village of Noon Bagla and its surrounding area. Forty people died in Noon Bagla including fourteen children crushed when the stone walls of their school collapsed. Noon Bagla was the economic hub of the area but less than ten shops, all badly damaged, remained out of over a hundred that stood before the earthquake. Every home was damaged or destroyed.

The area, supporting about 12,000 people, is badly in need of regeneration. The education system is failing, transport links are extremely poor, there is very limited health provision, though action is being taken to address this and people desperately need skills training.
